Grupo Stier and Category A Emergency Breathing System

Emergency Breathing System

In every emergency known to date where there has being a loss of lives due to an emergency situation we have always found that the report following such cases shows areas where gaps in equipment, training or knowledge may have being relevant.

The introduction of CA-EBS training is one of those incidents where after a series of helicopter accidents, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) organized a commission where a review of safety regarding helicopter travel was reviewed including the CAA, Oil & Gas UK, Step Change in Safety and many helicopter operators.

Following on from the commission and the development of CAP 1034 it showed that the use of the LAPP failed in certain areas where the CA-EBS met all requirements, the new CA-EBS meets such requirements where it can be deployed under water and with either hand; mouthpiece can be deployed within 10 seconds and the biggest advantage of all is that this unit can be deployed above or below water.

As a result of this all passengers travelling by helicopter in the UK were to have the CA-EBS completed by the 1st January where the LAPP would be withdrawn from service, CA-EBS training was implemented under an OPITO approved standard in August 2014, this meant that every person wishing to travel offshore with the CA-EBS required training.

The training is a dry classroom based course delivered over 1 ½ hours and the following topics are covered during training:

  • Fundamentals Differences between Rebreathers
  • Rationale behind the use of CA-EBS
  • Hazards associated with CA-EBS

Each delegate attending the course will have to demonstrate:

  • Pre flight inspection
  • Donning the equipment including buddy check
  • Emergency deployment of CA-EBS
