The Canary Islands

Are one of the seventeen autonomous regions of Spain and as such, they are part of the European Union (EU) and the Euro Zone.

Geographical location

Geographically, the archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, of the northwest coast of Africa, north of the Tropic of Cancer, between latitudes 27º 37’ and 29º 25’ north latitude and 13º 20’ and 18º 10’ west longitude. Just over 1,000 kilometres from the Spanish Mainland and about 100 km from Africa, the Canary Islands Region is set in the Atlantic Ocean as a strategic enclave between three continents: Europe, Africa and America.

Administrative division

From an administrative point of view, the archipelago is divided into two provinces:

Santa Cruz de Tenerife
consisting of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Las Palmas
made up of the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote

Capital status is shared between the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
